IBIS pioneers integrated MAM system at UMG
September 2005, IBC Booth 7.310: International music label Universal Music Group in association with Boxer Systems have pioneered a new approach by IBIS to integrated Digital Asset and Media Management.
IBIS has installed their Media and Workflow Management (MWM) software for the automated transfer and tracking of material back and forth from tape to server to tape.
New material arriving on tape at UMG is ingested to an Omneon server from which different versions and different file formats are created. IBIS moves the various media to required destinations whilst providing continuous tracking.
Customers can access a range of proxy material to which they have rights, enabling them to make their choices through the ‘MUVER” customer database, from &SUMM, with which the IBIS system is seamlessly integrated.
IBIS tracks the production process, moving video and audio from server to a variety of tape formats to fulfil each individual A&R order. The IBIS MWM system uses the metadata from ‘MUVER’ to check that the material is in the correct format, completing the process with the automated production of a despatch note to tie in with the end product. This ensures an extremely tight relationship between the customer, the production process and the delivery mechanism.
According to Mike Shaw, Managing Director of IBIS, “Historically, European A&R executives who needed to hear and see the latest offerings from UMG received a paper list of new titles and videos available, contacted the UK office and ordered delivery on VHS of the titles which interested them.
“Automating the entire procedure by implementing IBIS MWM has resulted in vastly reduced error rates and a faster, more efficient production process. This in turn has lead to significant savings in terms of both time and money.
“It goes to show that a good business model can cross the boundaries of what we traditionally think of as the broadcast industry.”
